Persian Cat Figurines

Called Persian for their so-called country of origin, it is more likely the Persian breed of cats originated as early as 1684 B.C. based on hieroglyphic references.

Having lived with cats from a very young age and then working in the veterinary medical profession for two decades, I had many encounters with Persian cats, but never lived with one. Most often, my contact with them occurred when they came into the vet hospital for grooming.

After seeing hundreds of them sit, unrestrained, during baths, full body clips, pedicures, and more without flinching, crying, scratching or biting (in fact, for the most part without moving), I came to jokingly question whether Persians had any personality whatsoever.

I love all animals and in particular all cats, but I could not understand anyone's attraction to these somber, motionless, quiet, non-reactive balls of fur with their flat, noseless faces, runny eyes, and unmanageable hair.

By now, I must have all the Persian lovers who are reading this up in arms. Wait! Before you click the "X" or start writing furiously to our contact address, let me tell you about my incredible, mind-altering experience with a little Persian that came to us last month.

She was brought in because the owners wanted her euthanized. They said she had been urinating outside the litter box, had been therefore confined to the basement for quite some time, and was one big mat from head to toe. She was elderly and they said her quality of life was poor.

We do not euthanize an animal that has a treatable condition and when the owner asked upon arrival if there was anything else that could be done and told me she had not been seen by a veterinarian for any of her problems, I immediately explained the need for an exam, bloodwork, urinalysis, and a HAIRCUT! It was a miracle that this poor kitty could urinate at all due to the mats and fecal balls covering her entire rear end.

To make a long story shorter, her bloodwork came back perfect. The urinalysis revealed a urinary tract infection, treatable with antibiotics. It took days and days to shave all her hair off without causing her discomfort. By the time it was all over, I and my entire hospital staff had fallen deeply in love with this precious kitty. I discovered the love, affection, appreciation, adorable personality, great companionship and more that a Persian cat could offer.

I saw why Persians are the number one breed in popularity. I learned of their sweet, gentle nature and their large expressive eyes.

Flirtatious, but never demanding, beautiful to gaze upon as they pose in a window or on a chair, I can readily see how these quiet but responsive little treasures become so loved by their owners. In fact, we were so relunctant to part with our new feline friend, we offered to adopt her rather than send her back to uncaring owners and they readily agreed.

This page is dedicated to our wonderful new friend, Tabitha, and the insight she has given me into the Persian breed.
